Re: [SoundDiver] JLCooper MSB 16/20 and/or MSB+ Rev2 with Sounddiver

I just find the MSBs and Sounddiver to be extremely confusing and I'm not sure how it makes sense to most people.  A lot of the posts that I've found on the MSB 16/20 seem to insist that it doesn't actually work with SD, but I think the problem is just insufficient information about how everything must be configured.  Once I had the correct connections and patches, SD could even scan, find it, and set it up correctly.

Getting SD to change patches on the MSB was a challenge to figure out - and again non-intuitive, as the instrument needs to be setup in such a way that it does not know the MSB is there, but still sends a patch bay program change.  If the diagram shows the return from the instrument going through the MSB, it won't function.  Instead, the instrument had to be set as if it was directly connected to the port that the MSB returning to, with the correct patch number selected in order for the MSB to switch to the instrument's ports.  Now, when I select the desired instrument, the MSB switches to the correct patch to connect it without my intervention, which is a good thing since I can't reach that rack.

The one thing that I still think may be possible, but still have to work out, is that I'm wasting a MIDI input for each MSB.  I have two sets of MIDI ins and outs going to and from the MSB, one for the MSB itself, and one for the instrument.  I suspect there is a way to share the instrument connection and save a badly needed input as I have fewer than I need already.

I'm looking at the same question with the MSB+ Rev2 units, as I may be able to use them to connect more of my instruments and can't waste any MIDI ins.
 
As far as SD behavior, when I attempted to let Sounddiver scan all, it identified and added about thirty instruments that I don't have - I'm not even sure how that's possible, before I aborted the scan.  So far I've only had success in adding instruments manually as the two I've been testing with have default device IDs that do not match the SD adaptations (?) and therefore cannot be recognized.  Also, if SD tries to verify connections on startup, it inevitably fails as the MSB switching is required for the instruments to be visible, and this scanning does not seem to take that into account.  After the first time that it REMOVED the manually added and painfully configured instruments, I had to disable this feature.

If I can't get everything connected using the three MSBs, and/or it is unmanageable, I'll be looking for something like some more emagic AMT 8 units since they have 8-in, 8-out and may be more friendly with SD.  The Opcode Studio 5LX looks quite handy - 13 Ins and Outs?  I'll have to keep my eyes open in case two of those pop up, although I would have to add something to use the serial connector on that unit, while I do have USB available currently.

As far as starting simply, I'm not sure I can be accused of that...  I'm trying to connect 24 instruments, currently connected one-way, back to the computer.  The only reason I have just two instruments connected is that I ran out of MIDI cables :D
