Whatever is supplied with kubuntu 6.06, I'll check.
apparently it's this:
libgtk2.0-0   2.8.18-0ubuntu2

I'd take those are regular ubuntu versions, and since ubuntu is so popular 
others must have tried compiling jamin from source?

I tried both cvs and the last release with similar result. Must be some gtk 
setting that is totally insane. As far as I can gather the audio parts are 
working correctly.
