Actually compressors on outputs aren't uncommon in live sound.  For
instance in one of the venues I am currently running I have a multiband
compressor on the output, as otherwise when pushed hard the tweeters in the
drivers get very harsh very quick, where a multiband compressor helps to
tame this significantly, something I just did about a month ago and has
worked splendidly thus far.  A simple 2:1 compression on the outputs with a
fairly decently high threshold will help levels from spiraling out of
control to quickly, etc. without killing all dynamics like a limiter would.

You don't typically need to use makeup gain on the output compressors true,
but even that is debateable.  But compressors certainly get used as well on
outputs of live sound, and of course this isn't even touching the input
side as I don't think you were debating that.
