Improvement of mathematical error should be measurable, considering corresponding input WAV and using a decoder that also honours the precision (libmpg123 needs some patching to really support double precision, but not much). But I presume there is serious double-blind-testing to do to determine audible difference. It would be interesting to see if raised internal precision has any effect at all with 16 bit input. Disclaimer: I didn't work on LAME code myself, so don't know details on how the filters are implemented.
