Autoconf stuff

I did a checkout of the latest svn trunk (everything went ok!) and I was 
working a bit on fixing commit r6410 (which currently prevents from building 
the frontend on my pc), then I regenerated the configure script, running 
autoconf, my ubuntu ships with version 2.69.
The resulting script is not identical to the previous one, so I do not fully 
trust it.

Now, I don't know what that "runstatedir" is for, neither how it can be 
skipped when generating my new configure.
Also, I see the detection of large off_t type is done with a different trick, 
although it should work anyway.
Are those differencies due to my autoconf version?
