I think the idea is that the files can come in a variety of ways, but
always from the same source material (a CD). That's probably analogous to
digital downloads, but since people are getting them directly from a "mass"
source, it's less clear what to do with any variety.

I tend to agree with Davi also: the variation you find between sources is
generally pretty minimal and allows for variation: my ripped CDs—not
torrents!—often vary from the CD track times, which vary from what's listed
on the back cover, and that's never been a problem; we allow uploading of
multiple versions of cover art; and multiple formats doesn't really matter
for the sake of variety (I get music from Bandcamp which allows me to
choose my format, but they all match via AcoustID).

I think there's value in capturing this data, but I agree that it could be
a relationship and not duplicated recording/release data (unless there's a
difference in the release, e.g. "iTunes exclusive bonus tracks" or
whatever).
