I think what we really need is a way of associating some information
with a release, like we had before NGS with release events, rather
than duplicating the entire release because one is mp3 & one m4a.

So e.g. you'd have the release's tracklisting then a table of date /
country / encoding (with the latter unset if it's not a digital media
release).  You then wouldn't duplicate all that tracklisting data and
the associations with recordings numerous times.  That's what I'm wary
of, from a technical point of view, whereas I can see your point wrt
encoding.
