XMMS will still require X to run. If you are a console only person, then the existing ogg123/mpg123 should do the trick fairly well. If you find a network enabled console player that has a fairly sane API, I'll be happy to implement it. The nice thing about these sorts of features is that they are entirely backend -- no translations or interface to write, so they are much easier to develop than the more visible changes.
