In addition to Marcus' statements in regard to this I'd also like to point 
out www.ibutton.com. Coin sized coprocessors capable of, among things, SHA-1 
and some of them containing Java VMs. A NetMD is a fair bit bigger than that, 
so there's no reason why NetMDs can't contain "heavy" devices.

Also I'm pretty sure that you could find an IC that performs DES or some 
other encryption routine if you have a look around - if not, I'm sure Sony 
could have made one pretty easily - DES was made to be easy to perform in 
hardware, if I recall correctly.
