Yup. Plus we already know from the Magic Gate references that Sony have a chip that can handle challenge-response stuff, key exchange and data encryption... No reason why they couldn't have integrated something similar onto the large system controller chip in NetMD devices (there doesn't appear to be a discrete MagicGate chip in the block diagrams I've seen... but then the USB "plugs" pretty much directly into the system controller).
