Your best chance for bidirectional communications is by using ALSA.
Many of the alternate OSS drivers don't support bidirectional
communications (at once, that is), and ALSA is just better anyhow. If
you have ALSA working on the PC, then edit the Makefile where it says:
# If you want to use ALSA instead of OSS, uncomment the following
# two definitions.
#CCFLAGS = -DLINUX_ALSA -DM_LITTLE_ENDIAN
#SOUNDLIB = -lasound
Then remove the comment character (#) from the CCFLAGS and SOUNDLIB
line. You will need the libasound-dev or equivalent package installed
on your computer for it to compile with this.
Then run alsamixer, and make sure the following controls are up:
-master
-PCM
-Mic
Also ensure the Mic is set for CAPTURE, (by pressing space bar on
it). You'll probably also want to mute it (press M).
