This is a post I placed on the sourceforge speakfreely devel list, but
just re-posting here for those who've been slow in subscribing to the
new list....

I've just posted the latest version of my patch to speakfreely, and
adds NAT support for the windows version. It includes an option to
share the listing ports for the outgoing sendto() connections.
In doing this, it means that you can't pre-connect the udp port to a
destination address, as doing so would mean that you would lock out
all other peers. Hmm. maybe that would be ok anyhow for just a
point-to-point phone. But for now it just uses unconnected sockets,
which may incur as slightly higher computational burden.
The technique for spanning a NAT with this option on is:
- if the remote end is not behind NAT, just connect as normal
- if both ends are behind NAT, start both up and connect to the
network address of the remote firewall. If the NAT firewalls are
nice, they will open the connections through in both directions.
The patch is available at
http://www.2pi.info/software/sf_speex/index.html
I'll split it off the NAT section from the speex codec if necessary.
