I really don't think this is anything to worry about. This kind of rule is
community moderated; it's not as if Discourse itself is going to chide
people for having off-topic replies. So it's just a matter of the threading
model being designed to "encourage" that, which I maybe don't think is such
a sin. Honestly it really is just good etiquette to start off-topic threads
in another chain. I think the reason people don't do that here is that it's
easy not to, rather than that it fits some community value. And also, after
browsing some of the more recent postings, I can't find a thread where this
display style has hurt my experience in the way you're describing; it seems
to really improve the experience in the majority of cases.

From what I've seen Discourse will greatly enhance the
non-developer-friendliness of the list by making quoting and links clearer,
providing a more modern visual interface, and the various other gizmos
already described by Scott C. We get a fair number of complaints about
people not wanting to use Nabble/the list because of that interface; I
think this would go a long way in alleviating that and getting more people
actively involved in discussion.
