It's not about off-topic threads, it's just about how communication
happens on the mailinglist. I really like the threaded view in my email
client as it allows me to see immediately who answered to what. When a
thread spins off within a topic it often means that a different light is
shed on the topic. That's why I find a decent thread view important. I
rather find it distracting if a new topic is opened for every sub-thread.

I fully agree, except for the threading thing. Anyway, I want to
continue reading the list within my email client. I don't like html
formatting and other fanciness there, so I've turned off that (writing
in plain text also allows formatting code properly with correct
indentation, etc.).
My main complaint about nabble would be that it eats parts of the
messages sometimes. Also, messages from people who subscribed to nabble
aren't automatically forwarded to the list (probably the biggest
disadvantage).
Anyway, if discourse is going to replace nabble I can probably live with
it. I'm not going to move over to the forum for posting and reading but
it's important to have an archive, allowing to point to specific
messages. For everything else I'm going to stick with the mailinglist in
my email client - be it as old-fashioned as it is.
