Yes, it’s still very much a bleeding edge kind of a thing, and I wouldn’t expect much in terms of backwards compatibility... I’d give it a few years before it becomes a de facto standard, much like the process around xorg->wayland, a transition that will probably hop along for quite a while more before x finally topples.
