Cannot build sources in VC++ 6

I recently heard about Zinf and would like to fiddle with the sources to
learn about MP3 decoding and playback.
I downloaded Win32 the source zip from
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zinf/zinf-2.2.1.zip and attempted to
build in Visual Studio 6,0, but got numerous errors related to STL
incompatibilities. Tying to shoehorn in SGI's STL was a miserable and
fruitless experience.I found a thread on this mailing list archive stating
that SGI STL is no longer required, and that one should get the latest
sources from CVS and simply build the BuildAll target. So, I obediently got
the "zinf" module from CVS.

Trying to load the zinf.dsw workspace into VC++6, I received complaints that
the following projects were not available:
 - id3v1
 - id3v2
 - pls
 - unzip
 - zlib

Sho'nuff, they do not exist, yet the dsw thinks they need to be around.
Thinking this may be a benign "refactoring", I set my Active Configuration
to "BuildAll- Win32 NASM Release" (yes, I installed NASM and added it's path
to my Tools/Options/Directories).

I also had to stick in some dlls, like vorbisfile.dll, etc, but got past
that ok.

There were some preprocessor blocks commented out, which resulted in the
compiler trying to find unistd.h and sys/time.h, which of course dont exist
on Windows... I was able to resolve those issues. However, I still have some
problems which I cannot resolve since I am not very familiar with the STL,
and not familiar at all with this Zinf code.

This goes on and on, for 87 errors.

What gives? I was able to install the binaries of Zinf and I can actually
use the product, which proves that SOMEONE at SOME TIME, of THIS DIMENSION
was able to compile this thing on Win32.

Can someone point me in the right direction.
