hmm. You should see some text (which by default is red, and in the
bottom left hand corner of the screen). I just tried it on my box, and
the default font doesn't exist, so it falls back to something tiny and
virtually unnoticeable.

I have my font set to:
OSDFont: -*-verdana-bold-r-*-*-38-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Should look something like: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~enxrah/xosd.png
