Thanks, but the CS person who created the dual boot disk is strongly against the idea of installing some new glibc...since that might mess up other programs which do work and which are using the old version.. (before hearing this from him, I tried anyway, and it FAILED to RPM-install the glibc I found online anyway..) So it looks like RPM for this SuSe I have right now is dead in the water...a shame.. The next two options are, when I have more time (e.g. summer) with either a new OS (we may move to mandrake) or else, trying again by hand to install the source code...if we do the latter and give the very short error message (which escapes me at the moment) on this list, would that help?
