AutoPortage

Has any thought been given to building a system to support maintenance of
autopackages or is the effort focused on just getting application developers
to build autopackages, individually?

I am considering building an "AutoPortage" something like BSD ports or
Gentoo's Portage.  It would be based on a registry of where to download the
sources for each version of each application along with a script to make and
package.

This would be a server-side tool for efficient maintenance of autopackages.
I am still pondering the details, but need to ask if any similar endeavor is
already taking place by chance?
