Not entirely true. Being a long time Linux user and sysadmin, I have 
simply given up all hope of installing third party software. If it is 
not in (*)buntu repositories, I can very hardly bother to suffer the 
pains of installing it. Also third party installations can break things, 
distro upgrades break them and so on.

So all in all I have completely stopped customizing my desktop 
installations. I don't even change icons anymore, because the whole 
icon-theme wizardry is so complex, that all my changes tend to be 
overwritten anyways.

This is a very sorry state. While in theory Linux is customizable and 
configurable according to my needs, in reality the distro (and 
associated policies and the general mindset) forces me to either take it 
or leave it AS IS.

I'd switch in a heartbeat if there were alternatives. Go Haiku?
