String operations

Okay, second question of the day.  What string operations does Steve 
provide?  Are there any builtin C-style functions for doing the 
standard things (like making substrings).  With that in mind, I have 
one other question.  Is there any way to find out the whole list of 
C-style function calls available in Steve?  And, on the other side, is 
there an easy way to do Steve level operations in the C code of a 
plugin such as making new objects, invoking methods, etc?
