Jon,

The screen saver is very pretty -- I've had it running for several days
now.

I do have one suggestion: the creatures sometimes start their run
flying through the air and the fitness test begins while they're still
in the air (I think this happens when they are long and part of them
starts in the floor and the physics rockets them out at high velocity,
or perhaps an instability due to random join setting). The result is
evolution toward long, thin "fliers" that travel long distances simply
because they started partially embedded in the floor (or whatever
initial condition sends them sailing through the air). (I'm aware that
this may not be guaranteed to happen -- if a population starts out
avoiding this condition, there may be a much lower probability of it
occurring later, and so perhaps no one else has seen this yet.) The
fix would be to start the fitness test after they've landed stably on
the ground. Then the search would be over fitter walkers rather than
projectiles. (Not that I have anything against projectile locomotion,
I just think evolving a walker would be more interesting...)
