I tend to agree with this - but mostly because I am paranoid. :-) I usually create a separate directory and load the files in (extract the tar file that was downloaded). I back up or make a copy of the database as well. Then i copy the configuration files from the old to the new dir. Since there are only a few it's not so bad. To preserve the same link name - I also have a link from the actual directory (e.g. mantisBT_1.1.8 to a generic name. I just relink the working one once it's done - and it is automatically updated for the users. It usually take me about 10 minutes or so. We could also rename files, move them around and so forth. Hence I suggest that during an upgrade you create a fresh directory containing the new version of MantisBT. Then either use a simple shell script (or manually type commands each time) to create symlinks to the configuration files you have placed in a directory outside the web root.
