rest interface and python 3 issues

Hi all:

Just a note that the rest interface still has issues with python3. I
get crashes when trying to submit PUt etc. Works fine under python2,
hope to figure this out over the weekend.

So Ralf's rest changes will probably not work if you run under python 3.
