Yup I have done that or written an extension to generate the js dict
suitably translated.

Correct, the localized js was in an html template while the
src url was an @@file reference.

Ok. I have seen people serve .css and .js static files by a front end
web server rather than serving it though the roundup server, but
improving the speed of file serving for static files I guess is useful.

Was translation actually used in the @@file path? It would return a
404 but the 404 is not usually visible to the user as it's not the top
level html file.
