Thank you for your reply.
I am pretty sure that I've left something useful out of the configuration file.

Here are the mail and nosy sections I have:

[mail]
host = localhost
port = 25

[nosy]
messages_to_author = yes
add_author = new
add_recipients = new

At the moment, I do not have any objections to sending the entire file if that would be helpful.

Hi Ed,
I've more or less followed the discussion so far. What I understand is
that roundup doesn't even connect to the mailserver. So no other MTA
you're going to install will solve the problem. In fact I'm using
postfix with most roundup instances I'm running without any problems.

So the problem must lie elsewhere.
Things to check:
- When you change an issue: Who is on the nosy list of that issue?
  If only yourself: There is a setting in the config that enables that
  you receive a copy of your own messages. This by default is off.
  The setting is in section [nosy] and is called "messages_to_author".
  John has already suggested you check this and I may have missed your
  answer. You should check that the intended recipients are on the nosy
  list of the issue.
- Can you give us the relevant parts of your smtp, this is the section
  [mail] in the config

Oh and there is a setting "debug" in section [mail]. This can be set to
a filename where outgoing messages are put *instead* of being sent. You
may want to enable this and check that changes to an issue make it to
that file. Only after you have verified that this is the case does it
make sense to disable the debug feature and try with a real mailer.

So let us know if messages make it to the debug file when enabled. The
next step then is to check if roundup connects to the mailserver. But
lets do one step after the other.

Best
Ralf
