I believe that Tyler Close has been doing exactly that for many years.  The problem is that you need the server side to cooperate.  While most sites will send you an email when you click Forgot Password, many use security questions, which are notoriously insecure.  In addition, there's a noticeable delay that can be annoying.  They mitigate that by requiring an email only once per machine, but they must be using a cookie to  remember your credentials.
