I've found that the single best way is to simply get more incoming links.
That is frankly the bottom line--what Google counts.  

Of course, using your title tags and accessible content are a must, using
targetted words helps too.

IMO, the only way to increase search engine rankings is to identify 
key search terms and to use those terms in your site's content: on 
the homepage and on specific, dedicated pages on the site.
