I've never actually worked with Vignette (mostly Interwoven) but I have evaluated it and worked with people who have used it. The general consensus seems to be that it's big and clunky. I know they acquired eppicentric some time ago, so their portal integration with the CMS should be strong if you are happy with that offering. I doubt many universities have implemented Vignette. I think it's a very expensive solution compared to some of the alternatives. And I think it may also require a team of consultants to implement, then admins and developers to support. I think one weak point was the content delivery module, as opposed to having a standalone site independant of Vignette. This could be a strength and a weekness though as it should allow for tight integration between the CMS and the live site.
