>I'm not arguing that business requirements aren't important, just that >there is nothing wrong in business requirements being shaped by the >possibilities offered by technology. In my view it's a two way street. I would submit that you can (in many, but non all, cases) take James's argument a step further to say that line-of-business professionals are unaware of their problems (opportunities) in the area of WCM (or CM in general). Obviously, most if not all of us on this list are well informed and reasonably educated on the opportunities for improvements in productivity, business processes, brand uniformity, compliance, etc... that can be provided by proper implementation of Content Management solutions (note, by solutions I am not referring purely to technology). However, I would submit that a large (but thankfully ever decreasing) portion of the working professionals do not realize that there are solutions for it taking IT 3 days to update a simple phone number or for ransom note web sites (these example are not to insinuate that IT is incompetent, just too busy doing work that line-of-business personnel should be doing). This is not to say that business requirements are not important, they are critical. However, without an eye on how technology can assist, the requirements may not be taken as far as they could be... Well, hopefully, I have broken open this can of worms ;-) Question, how have you been successful in educating executives and line-of-business professionals on the opportunities that exist? ------------------------------------------ Gregory M.
