Just had a look at Columba, really looks good and isn't as slow as I 
feared ;-)

Well actually I think about two options for quite some time now:
a) write a Mozilla XUL interface which accesses ZideStore
b) write an OWA look-a-like as an addition to ZideStore

I agree that for a certain class of users something which looks like 
Outlook is important. And while the current OGo Web interface is far 
more powerful than Outlook, this also comes at a cost of UI complexity. 
So writing a "lightweight" web client (of course while still keeping 
the large one) to OGo might indeed be an option.
