I've been using xAP for about 18 months now, for all kinds of things, and (as far as I can tell) haven't dropped a packet :-) I've forwarded your comments over to the author of the Outlook -> xAP -> Asterisk stuff for his comments. In terms of effort, there's a xAP library for C that would make it 5-10 lines of code (and is tested under Linux and Cygwin so is cross-platform).
