actually there are a few projects:
citadel (citadel.org) is a bbs/groupware messaging server

  A Citadel system is made up of containers called "rooms." A room may be
  used as an email folder, a discussion forum, a real-time chat, a mailing
  list, a calendar, an address book, an RSS sink ... sometimes a
  combination of any of the above, and certainly any other uses which
  could be added in the future.

  It provides numerous front ends to present to users, such as a
  text-based interface, an AJAX-style web interface, and many popular PIM
  clients using SMTP/POP/IMAP. All of these can be used simultaneously.


sTeam (open-steam.org):

  sTeam is a server for cooperative knowledge managment.
  areas combine syncronous ans asyncronous forms of cooperation for the
  managment of documents or content. it supports wiki and forum style
  webinterfaces, ftp, webdav, smtp, imap, nntp, irc, jabber and more...

  sTeam is the project i am working with, the goal for me is to turn it
  into a easy installable community collaboration solution.  currently
  stuck on finding people who can help design a simple enduser web
  interface, as well as groups who want to give this a try and help to
  polish it.

there is also psyc (psyc.pages.de) but it has more of a focus on
syncronous communication. (the basic idea is the same however: provide
access to any client)

which is exactly why the email needs to be handled via smtp/imap.

this whole topic relates to unified messaging, but that, as far as i can
see only concerns itself with the commercialy interresting protocols and
does not really try to integrate existing enduser preferences.
