The biggest points that make such an event realistic:

1) A venue whose price rhymes with "free". :^)  It isn't just the  
cost, which gets passed on to the attendees (and perhaps decreases  
the number of attendees, as noted elsewhere.)  It's also the cash hit  
and upfront risk from the person/entity securing the venue, months in  
advance.

2) A local person that will handle 101% of the site logistics.  Doing  
this remotely has proven a recipe for pain.

Research Triangle might grade out pretty well on these points.  Any  
ideas?
