One thing that occurs to me is that there's not a very good tradition of 
serious open source development among Javascript programmers or the 
Javascript community.  I'm not even sure if there *is* a Javascript 
community.  A lot of Javascript is open source in an ad hoc way -- you 
can see the source, the copyright holder may not care what you do with 
it -- but for a larger more sustained effort you need more than that. 
WYSIWYGs are probably some of the first (open and successful) sustained 
efforts, though clearly sophisticated Javascript has a rich future.

Since HTMLArea seems to be suffering a collapse of an open process, I 
realize that I should be placing more weight on the development process. 
  For instance, FCKEditor has a nice website and a lot of users, but it 
doesn't even mention developers on its page, nor does it seem to provide 
a public repository.  Kupu in comparison is more modest, but is clearly 
run like a normal open source project, led by people who have experience 
in that environment.

Anyway, that's just something I'll be thinking about.
