Longer answer:

Then main problem I recall of was the change in mysql not supporting 
mysql root with password at all, with default config (since a couple of 
years ago or so, probably ubuntu 18.04 lts). So the main issue was 
changing the new default auth schema (or whatever they call it) for 
mysql, which was used by default in ubuntu at some point years ago.

Once that is changed to allow mysql root (eventual) connections (see 
this as a step-by-step tutorial:

), or adapt your setup recipe to this change (as I did at the official 
documentation at https://doc.tiki.org/Ubuntu+Install ) then I managed 
years ago to keep using ubuntu lts server or desktop to use tiki as we 
used to do it (afair).

It there is some other issue different from the mysql default auth mode 
one, please provide more details and I'll do my best to investigate 
again how I solved it (I'm using ubuntu 20.04 since more than a year ago 
and testing tikis every now and then, yesterday again with no issues)
