This has been an issue on and off since we brought in the basic/advanced filters - i think if you do a prefs search it finds everything, but shows if it's advanced and you wouldn't normally see them, but i agree, it's all a bit mysterious for new users.

One thing that would help would be an alert box on tabs (or fieldsets) where everything is filtered out (like the API one) suggesting to try "advanced mode"...

Also a one time notice to new admins would certainly help, maybe using "bootstrap tour" (if that still works? ;)
