My point of view is, that this situation of losing connection between install.php and DB or losing the ability to proceed with the installer after having connected the database for whatever reason, is either a bug or a sign of a corrupted database. Imho this has to be solved for the specific installation and in case it would be a more common problem, it should be at least documented. Can you tell me more about your (maybe similar) problem? Ex.: * at which version your problem started? * how you manage upgrades as the installer does not work? * do you have also system or error messages referring to collation, ex latin or utf8? * ...
