Yesterday I made some sketches containing the feather, but didn't have a good feeling with any of them. The feather is quite figurative (non-abstract) and incurs (?) a lot of attention towards itself. But maybe I overvalue that - after all it's a sub-project of Apache :) The guys at james (http://james.apache.org/) did a great job including the feather object (BTW, I like this logo very much). It is more abstract than the original feather and somehow put "behind" the "m" letter. If we can do it as good as them, I would give +1 for the feather.
