Aha, I see now. This is one of the more common FAQs on the FOP list. Why 
doesn't cocoon work properly on a headless unix server, because FOP (or 
rather Batik in conjunction with FOP) requires an XWindows server to help 
with some of the graphics. If anyone has this problem they can either run a 
virtual XWindows server, or use Java JDK 1.4 which has a command line 
option for saying that it is running on a headless box.
