That wouldn't really help, because you'd basically shift the work of
encoding to every future site admin, who has to assign xlink ids to
everything then. And besides, xlink only works with items, not
with the kind of short urls that articles works with for instance.

So be lazy the smart way : once your module functionality is pretty
stable, writing encoding/decoding rules for it is easy :-)
