THat said, I think PNG is still the better way to go, when done right, they are smaller than GIFs and have better transparancy. IE 6 doesn't full support them, and MS browsers are not likely to if MS really is halting the standalone development of the browser, which is likely to mean a visible shift to either Mozilla or Opera as IE is already 2 years old and stagnating
