Re: Open Discussion: The Future of Xaraya

Whether it be holding an election, wanting to do marketing, or ideas
about code, talking about ideas, discussion, and debate, all good - and
I would encourage it to continue. Building on what had come before,
casting out things that don't work, and bringing in new -  that
is how we can improve.

However, it is only good in terms of progressing this project, imho, if
it's accompanied by doing. No excuses to ourselves that we need to
'wait' for this or that.

We now are in a situation with very limited resources. We've been here
before by talking and probably get to here again. For example:

My view last week (4 jan):
".. for those that have talked so much about having new plans and
ideas for xaraya project, I'd also encourage them to get on with it and
not hold back ...
"

My view 2 yrs ago (4 feb 07, committer list):
"1. Get on with getting on without delay. ....
...At some stage we gain the  momentum we need to start implementing
more formal processes at a real project level again.
...
"
Community is needed for a project, but the project will ultimately be
judged by the code - that is at the project core. The better the quality
and perception of that code, the more viable and long lived the project.

The longevity of the code or perception of that longevity itself is
important. Who wants to invest in time to learn a new application, or
waste client money, however good it sounds if there is no confidence it
will be here in a year, and no confidence there will be support when you
need it.

Right now, I believe for a guaranteed future we need to demonstrate we
have have code. By viable it means some relevant - core - code for today
and future needs, that is demonstrated as being planned, worked on, and
maintained. If its good, the rest of the mods and themes or extensions
or whatever will then come by 3rd party devs.

Nevertheless, whatever it be, marketing, planning, coding, docs, and if
you have time and don't mind loosing your effort sometimes - I'd take
your interest and go with it. Encourage others by doing. If it's meant
to be, out of that should come leadership and direction and more formal
structure at some point.
