I'm not so sure. Although I agree the sentiment and objective in both
licences are similar, legally they are incompatible still, specifically
the GPL v2 and and CC BY-SA 2.5.

I think this link is more specific to the tango/xaraya questions, and
although back in 2005, refers to the relevant licences that we are
working with.

As the respondent says at the end of the post, he is going ahead with
using tango with GPL in any case prior to getting the legal go ahead.

I can't find any update on the status to say it is specifically legal to
combine them. I'm sure there must be something later than 2005. I'm not
sure under aggregation and GPL2 that we meet the criteria in that the
icons will be integrally combined and display on the same URL (see the
FAQ on this at the GNU GPL project).

The FAQ at the GNU GPL project also recommends not using the CC BY_SA
for documentation of  software and having a compatible documentation
licence. It means easier maintenance of documentaiton without falling
into legal problems with mixed licences so i guess it might also apply
to icons. (see

In the end unless we can find the definitive legal response I guess it
will be up to the PMC to take the risk or not (as did the person in the
000022.html link above) and ensure any maintenance of the icons complies.
