Problems with mod_rewrite hack

There is a problem installing Xaraya 0.9 in a directory within an existing 
Postnuke 0.72 installation with the mod_rewrite hack implemented. The 
install.php script does not come up properly because of the rewriting rules
used to shorten up article URLS. Once I renamed the .htaccess file that 
contains the mod_rewrite rules, the install script worked perfectly. I need
to look into what needs to be done with the .htaccess file to get it to 
ignore the xaraya directory when rewriting the URLS. Any mod_rewrite 
experts want to take a crack at it?
