Upgrade/Update within Workflow

Dear developers,

is there any way to upgrade or update a ZMS (2.8 -> 2.12) without 
deactivating the history and the workflow before?

We have a big instance full of changing documents in different states of 
the workflow. And for the upgrade, we normally would have to stop all 
new changes and wait until all old changes are committed.
