I couldn't look at that at first because files were owned by root and
other things ... I fixed those (to be owned by me) but that didn't
change the results.

The error message comes from
gpc346u4-sources/gcc-3.4.6/intl/configure: { echo "configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables." 1>&2; exit 1; }
So gcc can't write for some reason ...?
