Olivier, Do you mind if I use the text of your emails directly to post a story on the results of the Sumo contest and on Roboka? Thanks, David _____ From: Olivier Michel [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 2004 1:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [webots-contest] And the winner is... Bob! Bob finally defeated RoboMarci who took the leadership over him at the end of last week. Bob was actually the original author of the first knee walking robot which was copied by many other competitors including RoboMarci. RoboMarci's author decided not to update his controller for the final (RoboMarci was #1 just before the finals) whereas Bob was updated. This was probably a very good choice for Bob! The victory of Bob is very clear: he won the final 10-4. RoboMarci did however a very good job. He is very efficient at pushing the other robot outside the stage, however, Bob showed us his new strategy: run away, avoiding the opponent and winning on the distance criterion! Bob is a very efficient racer! It is nice to notice that RoboMarci was winning 3-1 at the beginning, so if we didn't changed the scoring rule (extended from 3 winning set to 10), RoboMarci would had won the contest... I would also like to congratulate FreeTime who achieved rank #3 with his newest version. FreeTime is the best ranked robot who doesn't walk on the knees. He is very efficient, however, not against Bob (the match between Bob and FreeTime ended with a score of 10-1 for Bob). However, FreeTime will be a It seems that Bob has a very good navigation algorithm allowing him to walk (on the knees) all around the ring in a very fast speed. FreeTime was confused about it and could not walk towards Bob as it was going too fast (that's actually funny to see FreeTime spining round in the middle of the stage trying to follow with the eyes the race of Bob all around). Bob won several times by having reached the longest distance from its initial position. I would like to apologize to Kubiak who submitted me his newest controller Friday night be e-mail. I copied the files manually into his directory, but I forgot to change the file rights. The consequence was that Kubiak was unable to open some motion files and for example was unable to recover from down... We may run an unofficial round today to see how Kubiak would have performed and maybe to see a nice match between FreeTime and RoboMarci which didn't occured yesterday... Of course the result of this round will be unofficial and won't change anything to the results. It is just a kind of compensation for Kubiak... ;) I would like to thank all the competitors in this contest who spent a lot of time to develop their robot controllers and achieved very impressive behaviors for their robots. I hope all these developments could be easily reused in the next edition of this contest so that we don't restart from scratch and we will still progress towards even more impressive robots! Thanks to our sponsors: Cyberbotics, BIRG and K-Team. The new contest will be called Roboka. The web site is almost finished and I encourage you to visit it, register your robot and upload your files! The rounds will start this month. We also appreciate any feedback on the presentation of the site: http://roboka.org A question for Anders (Bob): could you send me your surface mail address so that we can ship you the Hemisson robot and Webots PRO package ? Could you also send me a digital picture of you I will display on the web site ? Thanks. -Olivier Yahoo!
