After a bit of off-list correspodance, GF helped me to solve this problem:
As I had installed DBXML to a non-standard location ('/opt'), Python couldn't
find the requires shared libraries.
I added /opt/lib to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable and now the Python
extension works.
