Server goes away, causes nasty Connector/J exception

Description:
Mysql J/Connector throws stacked internal exception. Using 3.0.8 from mysql.com.
I submitted this last night via mysqlbug but it appears to have vanished into the ether.
Apologies if it's a dupe.
In the meantime I checked to see if the case below worked from the main mysql monitor, it
doesn't. Client loses server connection. Guess this is a server bug not connector bug,
although maybe throwing a bad server exception would be a good idea if it detects the return
packet is corrupt?
Sorry for the double proof, I originally thought it was a connector problem because my real
test case didn't lose connection, it just returned junk or nothing. When I built this simple
test case it loses the connection. I give up.
